At the June 18, 2026, Upper Perkiomen School Board meeting, parent and Red Hill, PA resident Jan Madeira spoke about an incident in which several female students reportedly waited outside the girls’ restroom because a biological male, who identifies as transgender, was inside the facility. According to Madeira, several girls felt uncomfortable and chose not to enter. When her daughter became upset and sought help from staff, she was allegedly told there was no district policy to address the situation and that she could use a different restroom if she felt uncomfortable.

After the meeting, we contacted Jan Madeira for additional comment. She stated, “One other fact that I did not mention was that the girls had actually entered the bathroom at one point, and one of the school’s administrators went into the bathroom and told the girls they had to get out.”

This is absolutely unacceptable. Biological female students should not be made to feel uncomfortable or be expected to avoid facilities designated for them. Parents deserve answers, students deserve to have their concerns taken seriously, and the district needs clear policies that protect student privacy and dignity.
